Social Heavy

Hello! I feel I’m well overdue for a life update post so that’s what this is. For some context, I’m sat in a study room in the university library with two of my housemates, Josh and Alice. Hiring a study room for a few hours is the closest I can get to having a personal office at the moment so I try to make the most of it.

Living in our house is really like a sitcom. Recently different relationships have started and ended almost simultaneously and you can be pretty sure that if you spend a few minutes in the house something side-splittingly funny will happen. Most involve Josh, who I is definitely unique. We don’t tend to get many visitors so quite often when someone knocks on the door,  everyone who is in rushes to answer it, normally to find another housemate stood there. This time Josh opted to hide behind the door to surprise whoever was there. Alice opened the door to find two people from a Cancer charity there and it became too awkward for Josh to come out, so he had a whole conversation with the visitors from that position…

Josh and I often run to the front door when someone posts something and this happened as usual yesterday. I reached the item first but then Josh randomly decided to make a dog noise. Cue ridiculously loud laughing, one might even describe it as a guffaw, from the postman.

I’ve actually been ridiculously social so far this academic year which couldn’t be much further away from how I was last year. Last night for example my mate came over for pizza and we’ve been having house outings to the pub etc. I’ve even been out to the student union twice, and I’m going again this Friday. That makes it two times more than the entirety of last year! Both times I was very drunk to say the least. The second time it was a miracle I managed to got home at all. Therefore two Saturdays running I had hangovers and was worshipping at the throne (you know what I mean). Still, I’ve been worse and both nights were great fun.

After one of these nights Josh and I decided it would be a good idea to watch an episode of Doctor Who as we sobered up. The episode that ended up being on was The Doctor’s Daughter. Watching Doctor Who whilst drunk is an incredibly weird experience. The titles were really odd and I was finding the Hath, an alien race, particularly confusing as they don’t speak and just make weird bubble sounds. Neither of us managed to watch the whole episode and I awoke at 4AM with my head on Josh’s shoulder, who was also fast asleep.

I had another amusing Doctor Who moment earlier this morning when I popped for the little shop (love a little shop) for some brain food. The cashier saw the Weeping Angels T-shirt and then proceeded to try and take payment without every taking her eyes off the Angel. It was very funny and before I left I agreed that they were scariest in Blink and she informed me how it took her months to be able to walk past dark windows after watching that episode.

Another social thing I’ve done is joined the uni’s teaching society which is beneficial on various levels. New people, teaching benefits and a support group in case I have a horrendous time on my next teaching placement (I find out at which school and year group that will be with next week which is very exciting!). There I met someone who might well be my housemate next year. It’s all very complicated but basically I have to find new people and a new house for my final year at uni. Although nothing is confirmed yet it looks likely that I’m all sorted in this department which is really exciting.

Most of my life is a stream of lectures and work. I’m spending lots of time at the moment reading about standard algorithms for maths, which despite how it sounds is kind of interesting, and getting ready for the upcoming teaching placement. Some lectures are particularly dull but they lead to interesting pages in my notebook:

And I’ll just end with a quick update on my Veggie Month progress. Ten days in and I’ve still not had any meat. I had a pizza last night and would normally have chosen the one with the most meat on it but instead I when for a simple one with some feta cheese on, which was really nice. I even tried some Quorn the other night, which turns out is perfectly edible and appear just like meat. It was Cheese and Broccoli Escalope's and whilst they weren’t that great, they were still better than some things I’ve eaten at uni!

That’s all for today but as always there’s loads of stuff coming up soon so back sure you pop back. Laterz!
