Chart Chasers #28

Normally on a Monday I look at the brand new chart and listen to all the new music in it. But this week is slightly different as I have had to write this before the new chart has been revealed. Therefore I’ve used the Chart Update, which suggest what the chart will look like, to select this week’s songs. So forgive me if things change and any of the songs featured here don’t actually make the charts!

Chart Chasers

It doesn’t look like there’s going to be many new entries so I’ve had to dive out of the top 40 and select the highest song I’ve not yet written about. It turns out that is another Olympic Opening Ceremony song and it’s Emeli Sande’s version of the classic hymn Abide With Me.

Well I have mixed feelings about this. It does show off how incredible Sande’s voice actually is. But it’s a hymn, and a pretty dull one at that. An impressive performance of a dull song. 2/5.

Our next song this weeks is called Little Talks and is by Of Monsters and Men. I have never heard of this band before so this is a brand new experience.

Well that was pleasantly surprising. I’ve always liked bands with both a male and a female vocalist- when it’s done well it sounds wonderful. This is a great little track with a crazy video. 3/5.

Some songs just make you want to Scream don’t they? Not this one though, it’s just called Scream. And it’s by East Londoner Dizzee Rascal and is an official song of London 2012. And is also features Pepper but salt got left out.

Well it turns out Pepper has a great voice and sounds very much life Florence off of Florence and the Machine. Whilst Dizzee’s rapping is pretty decent, and has some great lyrics, I couldn’t really say I liked it. The music was too slow to rap over and it might have worked better with faster music. 2/5 but I must say I look forward to hearing some original material from Pepper.

Oh dear. Redlight has got lost apparently. Maybe he should have bought a Satnav. Then again I don’t think even a Satnav will help as he’s Lost in Your Love

Now don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a bad song. But when you listen to a song and it sounds like hundreds of other songs you’ve heard during your lifetime it’s difficult to like. This is pretty 90s sounding, which would have been fine then but haven’t we moved on from this stuff? It’s ok but Redlight needs to move on a few decades. 2/5.

Our final song this week is by Lawson who are apparently Taking Over Me. I don’t think I want to be taken over by Lawson and am going to do everything in my power to prevent them. Anyway, here’s the song:

Remember what I said about the last song (and if you don’t you have a seriously bad memory)? Well the same applies here. This sounds like so many boy-band songs that have done OK in the charts. It’s nothing new but once again it’s not awful. Whilst I don’t expect every song to be innovative and exciting, I feel that songs have to have something that stands out from the crowd. This blends right in. 2/5.

Well that was an odd edition of Chart Chasers. It was pretty low scoring yet I didn’t hate any of the songs. As ever let me know your thoughts and I’ll be back with more new music next Monday!

  1. I wish I would have liked at least one of these songs since I am always looking for new bands, but nope.
