Hello and welcome once again to Chart Chasers, where I check out the latest songs to hit the UK chart. This is my second attempt at writing this post as the first decided to vanish just before I posted it, which was infuriating.
First up today is a bit of a bonus track as it only charted #48 this week but I needed something to boost the numbers and I’ve not yet talked about it. It’s Love the Way You Lie by Eminem, featuring Rihanna.
Now obviously this was a massive hit but I’m not a huge fan. I really don’t like Eminem’s rapping, never have done, and whilst Rihanna’s chorus is great, it’s so flipping repetitive. Rihanna’s Love the Way You Lie Part 2 tired to compensate this but it just ends up as being too depressing and downbeat. So rather controversially I’m giving this 3/5.
Onto the top 40 now and the first track is No Hope by one of my fave bands The Vaccines. In fact I do have hope that this will be a good ‘un.
At just over the 4 minute mark, that’s much longer than some of The Vaccines previous songs. And personally I don’t think it’s as good. It’s all a bit “hipster” a word which I think basically means “boring”. Seriously, hipster clothing and stuff is just so dull! Anyway, a decent effort but not a patch on many of their other songs 3/5.
I can only imagine what will come next! Oh, it’s a song called I Can Only Imagine. It’s by David Guetta with Chris Brown doing the singing and Lil Wayne doing some rapping. Somehow I can’t imagine Guetta being able to make it sound like Chris Brown can sing.
Oh dear. I think this is my least favourite Guetta song in a long time, possibly ever. The song itself is pretty uninspiring, Chris Brown is autotuned (though Guetta does a better job with it than Chris does in his own songs) and Lil Wayne’s part is bad even for a Lil Wayne part. Plus the video pretty generic. Not good. 2/5.
Next is Adam Lambert with Never Close Our Eyes. If Lambert was around I would definitely make sure I never closed my eyes so I always knew where he was. He just looks so creepy!
Look at how creepy he is! But apart from that, this isn’t bad. It’s quite catchy and the voice work is pretty decent too. It’s probably the best song so far today and for that reason I’m giving it 4/5.
The UK has a new number one! It’s Florence + the Machine with Spectrum (Say My Name). Except it’s the Calvin Harris mix. I can’t see Florence and Calvin going together particularly well but you never know…
I have mixed feelings about this. I love the song itself and it’s another great track from Florence. But I’m not sure Calvin Harris adds anything. Well a beat, obviously. But I much prefer the untainted original. I think it sounds better without the beat on it. Sometimes the addition of a heavier beat is good, but here it is not. So this version gets 4/5 but the original is 5/5.
I hoped you enjoyed that and do let me know below if you agree or disagree with any of my thoughts! And don’t forget to check out the Chart page where you can see the entire UK Top 40 and my thoughts on every song!

Wow... "Love the Way you Lie"? That's at least two years old. o.O I used to love Eminem, but like you, I can't really stand his voice anymore. I love Rihanna's chorus though! heh... usually the "featured" people on his albums steal the show.
ReplyDeleteAwww don't be mean to Adam Lambert lol. I like his new song. :)
I've never heard "Spectrum" before, but damn I love it. The UK always gets the good music first (a lot of the stuff that charts in America is crap)... wahh
Anyway, great post!
